Visualize Your Success
Visualizing yourself accomplishing tasks before you attempt them is heralded by many Olympians and professional athletes. Also supporting this practice is The Journal of Consulting Psychology, which has published studies about the success of positive mental imagery. By dedicating a few minutes each day to visualizing your professional and personal goals, you can increase your goal success rate. Here's how to get started:
Choose your goals. Until you become a practiced visualizer, pick easier goals, such as hitting your weekly contact goals or writing a press release.
Relax. Experts say it's best to relax in a controlled environment before using mental imagery. Sit or lie in a comfortable position. Make sure there are no distractions while you visualize.
Visualize. Create a mental slideshow of steps that take you from the beginning of a goal to your accomplishment. Let them appear one at a time, pausing between images. See yourself accomplishing each step and then achieving your main goal. Imagine how good you feel as a result of your hard work and effort. It may seem difficult at first, but practice makes perfect.
Reinforce. For long-term goals with rewards, such as taking a vacation or buying a new car for having a record year, paste pictures of your sought-after prizes nearby and look at them every day. Imagine yourself using them. Consider placing these pictures on your computer monitor, bathroom mirror or the back of your front door.
